At my last Childrens yoga workshop we made calm down jars. The purpose behind this was having a tangiable tool that the children could use to help manage there emotions. Its super simple to create all you need is a glass jar with a lid, glitter, a few drops of detergent and water.
You can use your jar any time you feel upset, worried, nervous or angry. Excellent to use for a very anxious child. This is how it works.
When you look at your jar imagine that the water is your mind and the glitter is your thoughts and feelings. Shake up your jar really fast. Now have a look at the jar. The glitter should be spinning everywhere. This is how our minds are when we are in a hurry, stressed, angry or upset. Our thoughts begin to spin. Now next time you feel this way pick up your jar find a comfortable safe place to sit or lay. Shake your jar quickly. Then place your jar down close your eyes and take a big breath in and a long slow breathe out. Do this breath three times. You can gently hold your jar while you breathe if it helps you. Look at your jar, what is the water like now? It should be clear; all the glitter should be at the bottom of the jar sitting still. This is what happens to our minds when you are calm we are able to think clearly, focus and concentrate.
You can use your jar and breathing together to calm your mind. That’s what we do in meditation we use our silent sitting and our breath in and out then after a while you feel peaceful and clear.
